6 Everyday Self-Care Practices to Teach Children Healthy Living

I’ve been talking about self-care a lot on Instagram and I know how difficult it is for women to prioritize themselves. But you have to take care of yourself before you can fully support others. In order to be that good wife, mom, or self, we’ve got to start taking care of ourselves.

What does that look like?

I spent this weekend at the Portland Mom & Baby Expo where I’m an exhibitor and a big contributor. Seeing all these women and their beautiful babies got me thinking more about self-care and how you can actually put yourself first on a daily basis.

My goal as a mom is to inspire moms to be good role models for their children when it comes to health. This includes diet, exercise, and even self-care.

What are you doing to teach your children self-care? These 6 things are basic self-care checkpoints that you can do every day to take care of yourself and show your children how to take care of themselves.

  1. Drink Enough Water

How simple is this one! Make it a habit to keep a large water bottle at your side and you’ll never get dehydrated. Drinking water isn’t something you should put off. The benefits of drinking water are amazing. From increased energy to a boosted immune system, even saving money! This basic self-care checkpoint is a must every day.

  1. Work Out Your Body

Getting daily exercise is so important. Run, swim, bike, get to the gym, do what you like to do to get moving. I see so many people put off exercising to go to the grocery store or run errands. You know what I do to get around that? Order all my food online. I pick it up on Friday and it’s all done. When it feels like you’re too busy to practice self-care, look into time management and find a way to prioritize your health.  

  1. Fuel your Body

Eating properly is at the core of good health. Obviously, not eating junk or living on caffeine is key. These things just make you feel like a zombie. It’s easy to focus on feeding your kids and taking scraps for yourself, but you deserve more than that.

If it’s a struggle for you to eat well, are you getting your daily nutrient requirements? Do you even know what those are? We can meet and talk about the supplements and health plan that might be right for you. Don’t delay! Teaching your kids how to eat healthy by being healthy yourself is so important.

  1. Get Ready

Self-care comes down to taking a shower and using good healthy products: shampoos, soaps, laundry detergent. All these things add up to how you feel each day. And don’t you want to bring your best self to the plate? It’s worth working these simple things into your schedule each day.

  1. Get Some Rest

Make it a point to give yourself 7 to 8 hours of sleep a night. But also factor in time to rest throughout the day. Take 10 minutes to get off the computer and do some visualization or quiet time. We all need this! Just think about how loud things get in your house. We need a peaceful break.

  1. Speak Up

Basically, if something’s really bothering you, speak up. These things that get in the way will end up stopping you from doing what you need to do because you’re stuck dwelling on something. Ask for what you need. Really, try it.

And enjoy yourself. Life’s too short. Do something every day that makes you laugh, talk to your friends, play, see a movie, pick a class. Live your life.

“Coach Kim is an amazing option for parents of young kids. I’m a mother of a six month old.  Self-care can be really simple like drinking enough water, getting enough sleep, trying to do 15-minute workouts daily.”

But again, it needs to be prioritized, it needs to become kind of a routine like brushing your teeth or taking a shower. There are certain things that we do pretty easily, it’s just a matter of getting into some kind of routine.

Remember, you must make a choice to put yourself first.
